Questions & Answers with 10gen

What are the top requirements to qualify for this position?
**This position is open in Palo Alto and New York City:

  • Strong experience programming in and a passion for Ruby
  • Active participant and contributor to open source.
  • Experience blogging and writing technical articles on Ruby, ideally with an existing follower base.
  • Considerable success as a software developer, architect, technology evangelist, CTO, or consultant working with web or mobile technologies.
  • Strong command of web application or mobile application development landscapes.
Why is this position open?

You will be the voice of Ruby, on both the 10gen team and within the broader MongoDB community. You will be responsible for supporting MongoDB in the Ruby ecosystem through driver development, integration with open source tools, community support, and developer advocacy.

Describe the current team this person will join, including the reporting structure.

Like MongoDB, our team is distributed: we live and work in New York City, Silicon Valley, Atlanta, London, and Dublin, and get together twice a year for a fun, all-company retreat. Our last meeting included a scavenger hunt throughout New York City, dinner and drinks at a great local restaurant, and lots of conversation about open source software. We’re an open source company, and that means we value openness and transparency with our staff. Whether it’s at an all-company meeting, one of our weekly team lunches, or over beers after one of our conferences, we’re constantly sharing our work, play, and all the things between.

What percentage of the candidate's time will be spent on existing products/business, versus items that are new?

All engineers at 10gen are involved in every aspect of the technology, from writing code, to supporting customers, to taking part in the community. Our users provide us with immediate and constant feedback (both good and bad!), as the code that 10gen engineers write is put into production. No one writes code in a vacuum at 10gen; we all fail or succeed alongside our customers and community members.

What challenges will this person face on a daily basis?

MongoDB grew out of real needs facing developers building the next generation of applications. Our users drive our roadmap, through feature requests and bug reports. Our mailing list is active, and everyone at 10gen fields questions from our users.

In addition to helping our users building fantastic apps, we love participating in the broader open source community. We work on community open source projects (beyond the core MongoDB project) as part of our day-to-day activities. We all benefit from the interaction with and feedback from the community. To encourage that exchange, we sponsor and support free meetups around the world.

How are you positioned within the industry and what are your growth plans?

10gen was founded by former DoubleClick Founder and CTO Dwight Merriman and former DoubleClick engineer and ShopWiki Founder and CTO Eliot Horowitz. Dwight and Eliot began development on MongoDB in 2007, drawing upon their experiences building large scale, high availability, robust systems.

10gen is backed by leading venture capital firms who invested in established leaders like Oracle, Cisco and Apple as well as rapidly growing internet companies like Zynga and Twitter.

What is your business model?

10gen develops MongoDB, and offers production support, training, and consulting for the open source database.

10gen/MongoDB looks great, Dan.
How important is the Evangelist part of this position?
Would you entertain a pure Ruby Engineer without the "Evangelist" component?

Unfortunately right now we are not entertaining candidates who do not have the Evangelist component.
